2D Animation Studio Malta — Filfla Studio
Malta has a small but growing animation scene. At Filfla Studio, we have been making 2D animation here since 2018 — original films, commercial work and stage visuals, all produced from our base in Malta.
This is a brief introduction to who we are, what we make and how we work.
Who We Are
Filfla Studio is an independent 2D animation studio founded by visual artist Fabrizio Ellul. The studio operates as a one-person production house, working with a network of freelance collaborators — sound designers, voice artists, scriptwriters and animators — on a project-by-project basis.
The studio's work sits across two distinct areas: original productions made for the international film festival circuit, and commissioned work for brands, NGOs, cultural institutions and theatre companies.
Our Original Productions
Our films are personal, carefully made and rooted in specific stories. They have screened at festivals across Europe, Asia and the United States — including Oscar-qualifying festivals Encounters in Bristol and Fest — New Directors.
Filfla (2019), our debut short, won the Audience Award at the Kinemastik International Short Film Festival. Somewhere (2023) won Best Animation at the French Riviera Film Festival and has since screened internationally and been broadcast in the UK. Soho’56, our fourth production, is currently in production with support from Arts Council Malta — a short animation set in the 1950s Soho underworld and the Maltese syndicate that shaped it.
We also published Sarangu: The Sack Man, an illustrated graphic novel exploring Maltese folklore, distributed in Malta, London and Berlin.

Commercial and Commissioned Work
Since 2024 we have expanded the studio’s commercial output, working with clients who need animation for brand campaigns, social media, NGO communications and live theatre.
We produce promotional animation for social media and TV, animated stage backgrounds for theatre productions, short-form branded content, title sequences and motion graphics.

How We Work
Every project begins with a brief. We work directly with clients from concept through to final delivery. You deal with the person making the work.
Our production pipeline combines traditional 2D craft with AI-assisted tools, which allows us to work faster and more flexibly than a traditional animation studio without sacrificing the handcrafted quality that defines the work.

Why Malta
Working from Malta gives the studio a specific perspective — a Mediterranean island with a layered history, a small but active creative community and direct access to the EU funding landscape. Much of our original work draws on Maltese culture, folklore and contemporary experience. Our commercial work serves both local Maltese clients and international organisations working in Malta.
